Shanthigramam leprosy village at Karigiri in South India is supported by St John’s

A group from St John’s visited the village in January 2008. Below is an extract from a journal written by Revd Phil Collins of the visit, and some photographs taken at the time…

Our friends in Shanthigramam Leprosy Village

We visited Shanthigramam, the leprosy village with which we are also linked financially and prayerfully. It was good to see so many old friends from our previous visit, and to meet new ones who have just moved in, some off the streets, having had to beg to make a living before. Language was a problem – but we communicated by song, and most importantly, by touch and hugs. This wonderful set-up is funded by the staff at Karigiri themselves, by a few others, and by us in a small way. Nothing, of course, from the Tamil Nadu Government.
